OBJECTIVES OF THE PROGRAMME :
Foster national and international efforts to formulate, and scale up implementation of effective, evidence-based policies, strategies, interventions and activities on Child and Adolescent Health and development, including the Integrated Management of Child Health (IMCI) strategy, aiming to further reduce mortality and morbidity from major diseases, promote healthy growth and development of children under five years of age and promote health in adolescents.

Purpose of the Post:
To provide guidance and technical support to Member States in changing Child and Adolescent Health (CAH) status in the Eastern Mediterranean Region by enhancing countries' capacity in the development of policies and strategies, planning, implementation and evaluation of CAH programmes.
Description of duties:
Organizational Context:
Under the direct supervision of the Director, Health Protection and Promotion and the overall guidance of the Director of Programme Management, the incumbent is expected to coordinate work in the CAH unit and provide guidance and technical support to Member States in developing, implementing, monitoring and evaluating child and adolescent health programmes, with special focus on high burden countries and in line with CAH related regional initiatives.

Summary of Assigned Duties:
The incumbent will perform the following duties:

- Develop/update and implement evidence-based regional child and adolescent health strategies, including the Integrated Management of Child Health (IMCI) strategy, and prepare regional planning documents and reports;
- Coordinate, advise and assist countries in the Region by introducing, adapting, updating and maintaining policies, strategies and guidelines and planning for implementation, monitoring and evaluation of IMCI activities in the area of child and adolescent health;
- Advise and provide technical support to countries in the Eastern Mediterranean Region on the development, coordination and management of activities related to child health and adolescent health;
- Support the capacity building at regional and country levels for child and adolescent health and development programmes through training courses, regional consultations, inter-country meetings and workshops; and field visits;
- Provide advice and coordinate development of approaches to child and adolescent health pre-service education at regional level for medical and allied health professional teaching institutions;
- Monitor and evaluate activities and services for children and adolescents at different levels, including follow-up after training, surveys and programme reviews; coordinate CAH-related operational research activities at regional and country level;
- Actively coordinate efforts with interested partners and agencies in the Region in the areas of child and adolescent health and development and contribute to resource mobilization in these areas;
- Contribute to the global efforts in the area of CAH;
- Provide technical guidance, technical support and supervision to WHO country office staff responsible for child and adolescent health in the Region.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Education:
Essential: University degree in Medicine and Master's degree in public health and/or paediatrics.

Desirable: Doctorate or equivalent degrees in public health and/or paediatrics.

Functional Skills and Knowledge:
- Advanced knowledge of child and adolescent health and development programmes. Broad knowledge of operational research. Proven skills in management, planning, training, and evaluation. Excellent analytical skills.
- Excellent leadership skills.
- Ability to coordinate, manage, implement and evaluate child and adolescent health programmes.
- Ability to relate and work well with people of different cultures, gender and backgrounds.

Other Skills:
Proficiency in MS Office and data management.
Experience:
Essential: At least 10 years of combined experience at the national and international levels in management of public health programmes including the area of child and adolescent health.

Desirable: Experience in developing countries and in planning, implementing, monitoring and evaluating IMCI activities.
Languages:
Excellent knowledge of English. Working knowledge of Arabic or French is desirable.

Annual salary: (Net of tax)
USD 80,887 at single rate
USD 87,069 with primary dependants
