Communications & Media Officer - Job Advertisement

The International Planned Parenthood Federation (IPPF), Africa Regional Office is looking for a dynamic qualified person to fill the position of Communications & Media Officer.
The International Planned Parenthood Federation (IPPF) is the leading global NGO in the field of Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR). It is currently working in more than 170 countries in the world. The Africa Regional Office (IPPFARO), based in Nairobi, is one of IPPF’s six regional offices.
The role requires the ability to tap into key social, political, economic, environmental, cultural and technical trends happening in the region. The post holder will also be able to evaluate the communication needs of the region and where appropriate feed into key pieces of work and be able to develop and produce communication/media strategies. Strong photography and audio visual skills would also be desirable.
The post holder will need to have sound technical knowledge /understanding of sexual and reproductive health including family planning; strong written, presentation and analytical skills; including evaluation and excellent communication skills.
PERSON SPECIFICATION
• Assist in strengthening partnerships with media outlets to ensure high visibility and coverage of IPPFAR’s events, programmes and activities
• Write a range of media materials, ensuring it remains consistent, upbeat and delivered in a timely manner
• Unify messages and communications around the IPPF’s strategic plan to achieve positive awareness and brand alignment
• Evaluate and review opportunities to improve IPPF communication activities to ensure target audiences are being effectively reached
• Coordinate the management and updating of information on the IPPF website and support the development and use of social media platforms
• Initiating or accompanying Programme Advisors visits to produce case-studies, quality photographs and basic film for use in IPPF’s media, fundraising, education and advocacy materials
• Maintain a database of all media organisations and key media personnel in Africa
• Maintain ARO’s web presence and social media to increase visibility
• Support programme Advisers to identify opportunities for media visibility
• Generate and proactively seek coverage of IPPFAR’s work, pitching stories and providing background materials
• Contribute to a culture of information sharing and organisational learning in partnership development and communication
• Provide technical assistance to IPPF Member association in their communications work
• Coordinate press events and media outreach opportunities.
With at least 3 years work experience doing similar or related work in an international NGO or similar organization; you must have degree in Journalism, Mass Communication or Public Relations. The position is designed for an experienced and self-motivated person with a background in editing / writing and production of communication materials for international development organisations and experience of working with a corporate brand.
Proficiency in English and in French with a working knowledge of the other language is essential. Knowledge of Portuguese is an added advantage.
The post will require significant travel, up to 30%.
