Trainee Coordinator, Libya Projects

BBC Media Action
BBC Media Action uses media and communications to reduce poverty and promote human rights in developing countries and fractured states. To achieve this, it partners with civil society, local media and governments to:
  • produce creative programmes in multi-media formats which inform and engage audiences around key development issues;
  • strengthen the media sector through building professional capacity and infrastructure.
BBC Media Action promotes development and human rights through three main thematic areas of health, governance and rights, and humanitarian and emergency preparedness.
BBC Media Action in Libya
Since the end of 2011, just months after the fall of the Gaddafi regime, BBC Media Action has been working in Libya to develop programming that will improve Libyans' access to information and encourage debate and participation in the country's transition. The current extensive fighting across the country has meant that BBC Media Action has relocated its operations to Tunis for an interim period.
Purpose of the role
The Trainee Coordinator will ensure the smooth running of BBC Media Action’s trainee programmes and training outputs. The post is based in Tunis, where BBC Media Action’s Libya operations are temporarily based. 
Key responsibilities
  • Work closely with trainers, trainees and BBC Media Action staff to organise and coordinate capacity-building activities in line with agreed objectives;
  • Support the smooth running of training - coordinate with planning, schedules and documentation, as required;
  • Support with selection of trainees, monitor their progress and support their learning;
  • Produce, update and circulate trainee welcome pack;
  • To act as a key point of contact for trainees and trainers - dealing with any queries around operations in Tunis;
  • Support the coordination of trainees’ and trainers’ travel and accommodation, including drafting and inputting into risk assessments;
  • Attend and participate in editorial meetings, as required;
  • Coordinate trainer and trainee evaluations of training and production;
  • Follow BBC safety requirements and instructions and support project/country office teams to comply with BBC Media Action procedures, such as health and safety guidelines, financial management procedures and procurement guidelines, as required;
  • Uphold BBC editorial guidelines - with support from in-country and London teams;
  • Assess future training needs and engage in discussions around work beyond current projects;
  • Be available to work in the office or on location; may be required sometimes to work long hours, on weekends or on public holidays.
Essential skills and experience
  • Experience of successful project coordination and administration, ideally in the development field;
  • Experience in either media or development (although experience in both is highly desirable); 
  • Excellent attention to detail;
  • The ability to work independently and proactively, to prioritise workloads, meet deadlines and respond flexibly to rapidly changing priorities;
  • Strong communication skills including the ability to write well in English
  • English and Arabic fluency; French desirable;
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
