Job Description: 
The Millennium Water Alliance seeks a Marketing Specialistfor an anticipated 5-year Transform WASH Program in Ethiopia expected to be awarded by USAID in the fourth quarter of FY2016. Transform WASH aims to accelerate correct and consistent adoption of improved WASH behaviors, with a focus on sanitation, through support to the public and private sectors in geographic areas targeted by other USAID Ethiopia health and nutrition activities through  
  • Increased WASH governance and management capacity at the subnational level;
  • Increased demand for low-cost quality WASH products and services, with a focus on sanitation;
  • Increased supply for low-cost quality WASH products and services, with a focus on sanitation; and
  • Increased knowledge base to bring WASH innovations to scale.   
Position Summary: 
The Marketing Specialist will work under the direction of the Chief of Party (COP) and will be responsible for managing household and private sector marketing activities described under points two and three above. With a focus on sanitation, the Marketing Specialist will develop and implement effective strategies to increase demand & supply for WASH products and services. S/he will also lead the effort to strategically engage both private sector and civil society to institutionalize market-based strategies for ensuring long term availability of WASH services, maintenance of WASH related infrastructure and services, and scaling up of cost-effective and appropriate technologies. S/he will develop approaches for close collaboration and monitoring of relevant activities of health extension workers, manufacturers and local providers of WASH products and services. 
Key Roles and Responsibilities:  
  • Orchestrate an integrated multi-stakeholder approach to develop systems, enhance behavior change and scale access to WASH
  • Facilitate collaboration with the health sector, and in particular with health extension workers, to increase household demand for WASH products and services
  • Coordinate development and implementation of strategies for private sector engagement with a view to increasing household demand for WASH products and services
  • Coordinate participatory process to develop evidence-based innovations for high impact, cost-effective and scalable WASH products and services; and facilitate the design and implementation of effective strategies to increase supply of the same.
  • Lead development, implementation and monitoring of strategies to strengthen value chains to supply WASH products and services
  • Facilitate capacity strengthening for local private sector, with a view to strengthen their engagement in the value chains for WASH products and services.
  • Facilitate access to finance for the private sector, with the primary aim of enabling their engagement in the value chain for WASH products and services.  
Required Experience and Skills:  
  • Have at least a Master’s Degree in a relevant field, such as business, management, economics, finance or marketing
  • Have at least ten years of experience in marketing, private sector development or behavior change especially within the Ethiopian context
  • Experienced in designing and executing marketing campaigns, including market analyses, audience segmentation, developing evidence-based market strategies, implementing and evaluating campaigns
  • Strong communication skills, both interpersonal and written
  • Working experience in developing countries; experience in Ethiopia preferred
  • Strong supervision and mentoring/capacity-building skills.
  • Excellent language skills in both English and Amharic
  • Strong MS Office skills, including Word, Desktop Publisher. Multimedia competencies are an advantage
