Country Director, South Sudan

by Unknown  |  at  7:00 AM

About Idlo in South Sudan
Upon independence from Sudan on 9 July 2011, the Republic of South Sudan changed its legal system from the civil law, Sharia-based legal regime of the north, and adopted a common-law, English language legal system. However, decades of civil war and neglect by the Sudanese Government left South Sudan’s legal institutions without the human resources necessary to fulfil their mandates. Many justice sector professionals received an Arabic-language Islamic/civil law education, presenting challenges for the reinstatement of the common-law system. South Sudan faces the dual task of increasing its overall population of qualified legal professionals, while simultaneously retraining practicing lawyers and prosecutors to effectively operate in the country’s new law system. Equally significant, continuing internal conflict has resulted in limited access to justice mechanisms and opportunities for the population of South Sudan.
To mitigate these challenges IDLO is currently implementing the following projects in South Sudan: Supporting the Establishment of the Legal Training Institute - To ensure legal and justice sector professionals have uniform, constant and standardized access to professional legal training; Strengthening Legal Education at the College of Law, University of Juba - To develop a new generation of justice actors that is better prepared to serve the people of South Sudan; Enhancing the Capacity of the Judiciary - To capacitate the judiciary to manage its mandate independently, administer Justice in accordance with the Law, and increase consistency of judicial practice. Finally, IDLO is working towards Facilitating Access to Justice through improved competency of relevant justice institutions.
