Chemonics seeks a reading specialist for an upcoming USAID-funded education initiative in Liberia. The purpose of the anticipated Read Liberia! Project is to improve the reading skills of students in kindergarten to grade 2. At the conclusion of this five-year USAID project, students will be expected to read with fluency and comprehension. Read Liberia! will aim to increase government commitment to and support of evidence-based reading instruction, improve early grade reading classroom instruction, improve delivery systems, and increase family and community support of early grade reading. We are looking for individuals who have a passion for making a difference in the lives of people around the world.Responsibilities include:
- Lead curriculum and materials development, supplementary materials development, lesson planning, and teacher professional development components of the project
- Provide quality assurance for the implementation of teacher training, coaching, and community outreach
- Build collaborative relationships with governmental agencies, donor/client organizations, and other NGOs to enhance quality and effectiveness of programming
- Review, analyze, and evaluate the effectiveness of literacy-related activities and make recommendations for improvement to meet project goals
- Contribute knowledge and research findings related to best practices for early grade reading instruction, material development, and curriculum design
Qualifications:
- Minimum of a Master's degree (PhD preferred) in education, literacy, early grade reading, or a relevant field
- Five years of demonstrated experience working in improving early grade reading
- Experience developing materials for early grade reading and designing pre-service and in-service teacher training programs
- Understanding of balanced literacy, early literacy competencies, and reading diagnostics
- Experience with the Early Grade Reading Assessment (EGRA)
- Strong understanding of the development and education issues in Liberia, or other similar West African countries
- Experience liaising with local counterparts and organizations active in education
- Experience with grants management
- Familiarity with USAID tools and methodologies to improve education outcomes, preferable
- Strong written and oral communication skills
- Fluency in spoken and written English required
