TITLE: Pan African Policy and Advocacy Fellowship

ROLE PURPOSE
This role has been created as an opportunity to expand the knowledge and understanding of children rights and wellbeing of African young people and develop their advocacy and policy research capacity. The successful candidate will play an important role in supporting Save the Children advocacy on the implementation of the Post-2015 frameworks namely the Sustainable Development Goals and Agenda 2063 Ten-Year Implementation Plan and related policy research pieces of work.
The role holder will work as part of the African Union Advocacy Office team based in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. S/he will support the development and delivery of advocacy content and message in coordination with the advocacy team. S/he will provide the office with policy research support, draft advocacy briefs and talking points on priority issues in coordination with the advocacy office staff. S/he will also be expected to participate in, and on other occasions represent the office in external information gathering and lobby meetings.
A work plan, as well as a learning and development plan, will be agreed with the fellow during the induction period.
SCOPE OF ROLE:
Reports to: Director, AU Global Advocacy Office
Key internal relationships: Advocacy Office Director and other staff; advocacy staff in Africa regional and country offices; Save the Children members programme staff in Africa.
KEY AREAS OF ACCOUNTABILITY:
Advocacy
· Support the implementation of our advocacy strategy on the Post 2015 development frameworks namely the Sustainable Development Goals and Agenda 2063 Ten-year Implementation Plan, and acting as the focal point on these agendas for the Addis Advocacy Office
  • Assist with timely and tactical lobbying, influencing and sustaining alliances with key targets in the African Missions, AU, UNECA, (at regional and national levels) on key priorities
  • Work with and engage with other CSO groups advocating for the joint implementation of both frameworks and the establishment of a Pan African accountability mechanism.
Policy Research and Other Outputs
  • Draft policy briefs on key advocacy priorities
  • Draft advocacy briefs prior to key advocacy events in coordination with advocacy team
  • Assist in the documentation of policy case studies, lessons learned, advocacy campaigns and project reporting in support of the Addis Advocacy Office activities
  • Provide support for meetings, training sessions/workshops organized or attended by Save the Children staff
  • Compile the quarterly AU Liaison and Pan Africa Office Newsletter and monthly advocacy updates
External Representation
  • Represent Save the Children in external fora and with other agencies, in coordination with staff of the advocacy office.

EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS
Essential
  • Undergraduate degree in Law, Social Sciences, Education, or equivalent work experience in research, writing and dissemination of key messages in the African context. A Maters’ degree preferred.
  • Excellent oral and written communication in English
  • Experience in working with civil society, African Union, government bodies particularly on issues related to children.
  • Minimum one year of policy research and or advocacy experience
  • Experience working and supporting the organization of policy forums/meetings.
Desirable
  • Commitment to and understanding of Save the Children aims, values and principles.
  • Ability to speak and write in French
  • Experience working with Civil Society Organisations, Governments and the African Union will be an added advantage.
